Castel Gandolfo, volcanic lakes and tasting of local delicacies

About

We will visit 4 towns nestled on the edge of Lake Albano.

The first is Albano, famous for its ancient history. At the beginning of the first millennium, the legendary city of Alba Longa was located on its territory, where, according to legend, the brothers Romulus and Remus were born. The city was destroyed by the Romans, but an inquisitive eye will notice ancient ruins here and there. We will visit the Church of St. Peter and the ancient amphitheater of Severus. At the request of tourists, we will walk along the lake, following the ancient medieval path.

Then we will go to the town of Arichia, located in the shell of an ancient volcano. We will stop at the central square and admire the Chigi Palace. The palace is richly decorated and is famous for the filming of the movie Gattopardo with Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale. The city produces porchetta, pork meat roasted on a spit, distinguished by its unusual softness and unforgettable taste.

Then we will visit Castel Gandolfo. This town is home to the summer residence of the Pope, numerous gardens and breathtaking views of the lake. After walking around the historic center and visiting the Church of St. Thomas, we will head to taste local wines, salami, prosciutto and cheeses.

Next, our path lies in the town of Nemi, famous for its strawberries. The lake to visit is different – Nemi, much smaller and resembling a huge blue eye. The atmosphere of this settlement is far from the pomp of Castel Gandolfo, but has more authenticity. We will walk near the lake and visit 2 medieval churches. One of them – Santuario – is famous for its amazingly beautiful crucifix, made not by the hands of an artist, but by the hand of the Almighty, which the townspeople firmly believe in. In Nemi, we will eat the famous local delicacy – strawberries.
